On Saturday, August 31, 2024, we had the incredible opportunity to host a Black Breastfeeding Week Community Celebration at the Solano Community Health Hub. Doula Doula, a collective of professional birth workers devoted to assisting expectant parents in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, organized a day filled with empowerment, learning, and community connection. The event was designed to bring together new and experienced mothers, healthcare professionals, and community members to celebrate and promote the importance of breastfeeding within the Black community.

A Day of Support and Learning

The event featured a variety of informative workshops and interactive discussions, all led by experts dedicated to supporting Black mothers on their breastfeeding journey. An International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) was on hand to offer personalized advice and answer questions, while a pelvic floor therapist provided insights on maintaining postpartum health. Additionally, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurse shared valuable information on breastfeeding for preterm babies, a topic that resonated deeply with many attendees.

The team of Doulas, who are also Lactation Education Counselors, were available throughout the event to provide support and guidance. They facilitated open discussions, allowing mothers to share their experiences and challenges in a safe, welcoming environment.

Building Community Connections

One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for attendees to build connections with other moms. The sense of community was palpable as mothers exchanged stories, offered advice, and formed new friendships. There were also provided activities for children, ensuring that the event was a fun and inclusive experience for the whole family.

Celebrating Black Motherhood

In addition to the educational sessions, the event was a celebration of Black motherhood. Attendees enjoyed free food, received breastfeeding gift bags, and participated in a mini photoshoot to capture the special moments. Local vendors also joined us, offering a range of products and services tailored to the needs of new and expecting mothers.

Why Black Breastfeeding Matters

The importance of events like this cannot be overstated. Black breastfeeding rates have historically been lower than those of other racial groups due to a variety of factors, including systemic racism, lack of access to breastfeeding support, and cultural stigmas. However, breastfeeding has immense health benefits for both mothers and babies, including reducing the risk of certain illnesses and promoting bonding. By coming together to celebrate and support Black breastfeeding, we are working to close the gap and ensure that every mother has the resources and support she needs.

Looking Ahead

We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to making this event a success. Your participation and enthusiasm have laid the foundation for a stronger, more connected community. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future, continuing our mission to support and empower Black mothers.
